Blepharoplasty is a surgical term that refers to cosmetic and/or corrective procedures involving the upper or lower eyelids. The procedure may involve the removal of fat from around the eye, affecting the eyelids and thereby affecting the patient’s comfort and vision. It may also, or alternatively, involve the removal of excess skin around the eye, often contributing to a drooping eyelid condition. These procedures are more common in older patients but can be performed on virtually any healthy patient in need.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

When extra skin or fat exists around the upper eyelid, the result can be a drooping eyelid condition that impacts vision. Surgically removing the excess fat and/or skin from the upper eyelid has a profound effect on patients struggling with eyelid-related vision problems and the procedure can often be conducted quickly and easily.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Surgeries involving the lower eyelid generally refer to the removal of excess fat residing in the area under the eyes, creating a bag-like puffy appearance that can also affect vision, depending on the severity. This procedure is also relatively easy to perform in healthy patients, offering a quick treatment plan and procedure process.

Double Eyelid Surgery

Some patients need both, upper and lower eyelid surgery, to improve vision and comfort. When the dropping upper eyelid is combined with a puffy bag-like lower eyelid, the impact on comfort and vision can make everyday life activities, such as reading or driving, very challenging. A similar double eyelid procedure is popular with many patients in Asia, resulting in a widening or rounding of the eye’s appearance.
